    Bella Freud

Bella Freud is a British designer who moves fluidly between fashion, interiors, film and fragrance. Since the early 1990s she has built a label that values narrative as much as material. Her perfume collection, launched in the mid‑2010s, reads like a series of character studies, each bottle framing a story that mirrors her work in clothing. Recent collaborations with heritage houses such as Penhaligon’s show how the brand translates its sartorial sensibility into scent, offering collectors a tactile extension of the Bella Freud aesthetic.

    Heritage

A house, in its own words

Bella Freud was born in London in 1961 into a family of artists and thinkers; her father was painter Lucian Freud and her great‑grandfather was psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud. After studying at Central Saint Martins she opened her eponymous fashion label in 1990, quickly gaining a reputation for witty graphics and unconventional tailoring. The label expanded into interior design and short‑form film throughout the 2000s, allowing Freud to explore texture and narrative beyond clothing. In 2015 she introduced her first fragrance, simply titled Bella Freud, marking a formal entry into perfumery. The following year she released Close To My Heart, a scent that blended warm amber with a hint of violet, and in 2017 she followed with Psychoanalysis, a composition that referenced her family’s analytical heritage. To manage the growing portfolio, Freud and business partner Glaser founded Bella Freud Parfum Limited, a company registered in England that oversees formulation, production and future collaborations. In 2026 the brand partnered with Penhaligon’s for a limited‑edition series called “A Matter of Fragrance with Bella Freud,” a project that combined Penhaligon’s technical expertise with Freud’s storytelling approach. Each milestone reflects a consistent willingness to cross disciplinary borders while keeping a clear authorial voice. The creative vision behind Bella Freud centres on story‑telling. The brand treats each fragrance as a character, a concept that stems from Freud’s use of word‑jumpers in her fashion collections. According to the brand’s own description, the scents are crafted to capture the mood and narrative behind each persona, turning olfactory experience into a form of quiet drama. This approach rejects the idea of perfume as mere decoration; instead it becomes an extension of personal identity, a wearable anecdote. Values such as authenticity, playful subversion and respect for craft guide the development process. Rather than chasing trends, the team looks to personal archives, literary references and visual art for inspiration, ensuring that each launch feels both intimate and unexpected. The philosophy also embraces sustainability, with a stated commitment to sourcing ingredients responsibly and minimizing waste throughout the production cycle.
