Heritage
A house, in its own words
Atrin Star's story begins not in glass bottles, but in leather. The company was established in 1934, initially focused on leather products. This early period laid the groundwork for a business that would later pivot toward fragrance. For more than seven decades, the company built expertise in materials, finishing, and craftsmanship, disciplines that would quietly inform its later entry into perfumery. In 2006, Atrin Star launched its first serious perfume line, marking a significant departure from its leather origins. The debut VIP Collection No. 1 positioned the company in the numbered-edition fragrance space, a format associated with exclusivity and collector appeal. From this starting point, the house expanded steadily, releasing additional numbered VIP volumes through the early-to-mid 2010s. The mid-2010s represented a particularly productive era. In 2014 alone, the house released multiple compositions, including VIP Collection No. 3, VIP Collection No. 5, White Afgano, and Granite. This concentrated output suggests a deliberate effort to build a recognizable catalog quickly. The following years brought Impressionism (2015), Realism (2016), and Granite Absolute (2017), a reworked version of an earlier release. The company also revisited its foundational scent with VIP Collection No. 1 New Edition and VIP Collection No. 2 New Edition, both issued in 2015. Today, Atrin Star remains headquartered in Issy-les-Moulineaux, a commune in the southwestern suburbs of Paris. Its longevity, spanning leather to perfume, reflects a business willing to evolve while maintaining its French base. Atrin Star's creative direction draws on a distinctive lineage, transitioning from tactile craftsmanship in leather to the intangible art of scent. While specific creative directors and perfumers are not publicly credited, the house's output reveals a clear interest in artistic references: compositions named Impressionism and Realism suggest an engagement with art history and the sensory language painters used to describe light, texture, and atmosphere. The VIP Collection, with its numbered format, signals a philosophy centered on curation and position within a series. Rather than releasing broadly accessible flankers, the house appears to favor concentrated drops that reward repeat engagement. This approach aligns with a collector mindset, treating each release as a distinct entry in an ongoing narrative. White Afgano, a 2014 release, references a well-known strain of Afghan cannabis long celebrated in perfumery and incense traditions. The choice reflects a willingness to engage with unconventional or polarizing notes, suggesting the house prioritizes olfactory distinction over mainstream palatability. Similarly, Granite and its later Absolute iteration imply an interest in mineral, stony accords, an unusual and challenging territory in fine fragrance.
