A house, in its own words
Aquaflor Firenze was established in 2009 in Florence. Two figures are credited with its founding in different sources: Mauro Arena, described as a founder and art lover who imagined a perfume house built on ideals of beauty, and Sileno Cheloni, identified in separate coverage as the maison's maitre perfumer. A 2021 interview places the brand's origin roughly twelve years before that conversation, consistent with a 2009 start. From the beginning, the project was tied to Florence's identity as a historic capital of perfume, a city where Renaissance apothecaries, monastic gardens, and the trade in iris, rose, and citrus shaped European fragrance for centuries. Aquaflor channels that lineage by situating its laboratory and production inside a Renaissance palace, Palazzo Corsini Antinori Serristori, lending the brand a direct architectural connection to the city's past. The house has since grown into a small but internationally recognized niche operation, with stockists and editorial features in multiple countries while remaining rooted in its Florentine workshop. Aquaflor approaches perfumery as a continuation of Florence's artisanal traditions, treating scent-making as a craft discipline rather than a mass-market product. The house composes each fragrance with deliberate reference to the city's botanical and olfactory heritage, favoring materials with historical ties to Tuscany, from iris root and Mediterranean herbs to resins and woods. There is a stated commitment to small-batch creation, with formulas developed and finalized in-house rather than outsourced to external labs. This hands-on, authorial approach shapes everything from ingredient selection to the pacing of new releases, which arrive sparingly. The brand's creative direction also embraces collaboration with artists and visual creatives, positioning each launch as a multidisciplinary project that links perfume to painting, literature, and the decorative arts. The underlying belief, visible across the house's work, is that a fragrance should feel authored, located, and connected to a specific cultural moment in Florence.
