    Jo Shaw

Jo Shaw is the founder and principal perfumer behind Floriography, the Hong Kong-based artisan perfume house she has shaped over the past eight years. A 35-year-old creative with deep roots in the city, she emerged as part of a new wave of independent Asian perfumers who treat fragrance as personal correspondence rather than product. Her training outside the traditional Grasse pipeline gives her work an autodidact's confidence: she builds compositions from instinct and iteration, sourcing raw materials with the care of a curator. The breakthrough came with releases that positioned shiso, plum, and other East Asian botanicals not as exotic accents but as central voices. Critics have singled out her unusually legible handling of green and herbal materials, with one reviewer remarking on the most recognizable shiso leaf they had encountered in a bottle. Shaw continues to work from Hong Kong, where Floriography operates as both studio and small-batch production house.

    The signature

    How Jo composes

Shaw's signature is transparency. Where many perfumers blur their materials into haze, she keeps her edges sharp. Shiso leaf appears in her work with an almost culinary precision, its green, anise-laced brightness intact rather than abstracted into a generic herbal accord. She favors materials with strong silhouettes: plum, osmanthus, tea, neroli, and woods that dry down without losing definition. Her structures tend to be lean and architectural, built in clear movements rather than dense accords. There is a calm, measured pacing to her compositions, nothing shouts, but every note knows exactly when to enter. The result is fragrance that feels composed in the musical sense, intimate, deliberate, and quietly arresting.

    Philosophy

    What drives Jo

Shaw thinks of perfume as a language of care, a way to say something too delicate for ordinary conversation. She is drawn to the quiet materials: leaves, barks, early blossoms, the soft dust of dried fruit. Her creative approach resists spectacle. She would rather a single ingredient arrive at the wrist with perfect clarity than a dozen notes compete for attention. Working from Hong Kong, she treats the city's layered sensory culture, its markets, humid mornings, incense, and osmanthus-lined streets, as an ongoing education. Each Floriography release reads like a letter addressed to a specific feeling or season, written slowly and reread many times before it is sent.
