    Bihter Türkan Ergül

Bihter Türkan Ergül has spent more than two decades immersed in the world of scent, building a career on a single obsession: the aromatic heritage of the Ottoman Empire. Based in Türkiye, she works as an international fragrance specialist with credentials in both perfumery and chemistry, a rare pairing that lets her move fluently between raw material science and storytelling. She founded Koku Akademisi, the country's first dedicated scent academy, where she has trained more than 370 students drawn from Germany, Qatar, Dubai, and beyond. For the past five years she has also operated her own boutique, designing bespoke compositions for clients who arrive with a memory, a letter, or a name and leave wearing something entirely their own. Beyond the perfumer's bench, Ergül has written on fragrance in Turkish and appeared as a scent expert in documentary work exploring the cultural history of Turkish perfumery.

    How Bihter composes

Ergül's compositions lean into the rich, resinous backbone of classical Turkish perfumery, where rose, oud, amber, and frankincense tend to anchor the structure. She works comfortably across concentrations, from attar-style oils to fuller eaux de parfum, and is drawn to materials with provenance: Anatolian rose harvests, Mediterranean herbs, woods with a long Turkish history. Her approach favors layering over spectacle, allowing slow-drying base notes to do the storytelling while brighter tops invite a first impression. Scents under her name tend to feel intimate and historically literate rather than trend-driven.

    What drives Bihter

Ergül sees herself as a cultural archivist first and a perfumer second. Each formula she builds is an attempt to recover something the Ottoman past left behind: rose ottos pressed in copper, resin trails through bazaar air, the quiet smoke of a hammam. She designs with a scholar's patience, researching historical sources before she ever reaches for a bottle. Her boutique practice reflects that conviction; she treats every commission as a translation of a personal story into scent. Teaching reinforces the same instinct. Through Koku Akademisi, she hands students not just technique but a vocabulary rooted in regional tradition, ensuring the craft survives the moment the last hereditary perfumer closes their doors.
