Heritage
A house, in its own words
Siela was founded in 2009 by Heather Sielaff, a self-taught perfumer working out of Portland, Oregon. Sielaff began building the brand without formal training in perfumery, drawing instead from a personal practice of blending small batches in a home studio. By 2017, the line had grown to include several distinct fragrances such as Overnight, Delphi, and Yasameen, signaling the maturation of the project from an experimental practice into a structured catalog. The studio remains on NE 28th Avenue in Portland, where Sielaff continues to blend every bottle by hand rather than outsourcing production. One source dates the brand to 2017, but the majority of independent references point to 2009 as the founding year. The brand has stayed deliberately small, operating more as a studio practice than a commercial fragrance house. Over time, Siela has cultivated a following among collectors of independent and niche American perfumery who value its hands-on production method and limited output. Siela's creative vision centers on the idea of the perfumer as an independent maker rather than a commercial operator. Heather Sielaff approaches each composition as a personal expression, working without the constraints of focus groups, marketing briefs, or seasonal trend cycles. The brand's catalog reads like a series of mood pieces, with fragrances named after specific feelings, places, and memories: Summer Leaves evokes a seasonal impression, Courante draws on musical movement, Tizita references a nostalgic Ethiopian musical mode, and Yasameen conjures a specific sensory atmosphere. This naming approach suggests Sielaff treats fragrance as a form of intimate storytelling, where the title serves as a clue rather than a literal description. The decision to hand-blend every bottle to order reinforces this philosophy, treating each commission as a small act of authorship rather than mass production.
