A house, in its own words
Nedahl Stelio spent more than twenty years immersed in beauty and fashion journalism before launching Recreation. She held editorial positions at Cleo and Cosmopolitan magazines, two of Australia's most influential women's publications, where she developed a deep understanding of how fragrance fits into people's lives and self-expression. The transition from publishing to product development came after years of watching readers ask questions about ingredient safety in conventional perfumes. In interviews, Stelio has described feeling unsettled by the lack of transparency in the fragrance industry and believing that using perfume should not come at a cost to personal health. She founded Recreation in Sydney's Bondi Beach with this conviction at the center. The brand set out to create what she calls clean perfume, focusing specifically on avoiding endocrine disruptors in formulations. Working with Australian manufacturing partners, Stelio developed an initial collection that launched in 2024, followed by rapid expansion of the range through 2025 and into 2026. The Bondi Beach location influences more than just marketing imagery; it reflects a lifestyle aesthetic that Stelio wanted embedded in the brand's identity, emphasizing natural living and conscious consumption. The house positions itself within the clean beauty movement while maintaining the complexity and longevity expected of fine fragrances. Recreation operates from a straightforward belief: perfume should not compromise your health. This principle shapes every formulation decision, driving the brand's commitment to natural ingredients and transparent sourcing. The house defines clean perfume primarily through the absence of endocrine disruptors, a category of compounds that Stelio identified as the main concern with conventional fragrances. Rather than positioning natural perfumery as a limitation, the brand treats it as a creative framework that demands innovation. The philosophy extends beyond ingredients to encompass a broader approach to fragrance as a form of self-care. Each scent development begins with an emotional or experiential concept, allowing the narrative to guide the final composition. This approach reflects Stelio's editorial background, where storytelling was central to connecting products with audiences. The brand encourages wearers to consider fragrance as part of a mindful routine rather than a hasty daily decision. Environmental responsibility also factors into the philosophy, with Australian production and locally sourced materials where possible reducing the brand's footprint. The result is a fragrance house that treats health, environment, and artistry as equally important rather than competing priorities.
