A house, in its own words
Véronique Bourgogne-Vatar founded Plumages Parfums with a clear vision: she wanted a house that communicated through spectacle as much as scent. She brought Bertrand Duchaufour on board as the founding perfumer, a collaboration announced publicly at Esxence 2019, the international exhibition for niche fragrance held annually in Milan. The timing positioned Plumages immediately within the niche fragrance conversation, among houses that prioritise artistic independence over mass-market appeal. Five fragrances composed by Duchaufour launched together in 2019—Parade Du Soir, Reflet Rose, Joyeuses Tropiques, Tapage Nocturne, and Blanc Ciel. The simultaneous release was deliberate, presenting a complete creative world rather than a single statement. The house remains small and focused, with no large-scale expansion or acquisition history. Each release continues to reflect the founding creative direction set by Bourgogne-Vatar. Plumages operates from a conviction that fragrance is a form of visual storytelling translated into smell. The house takes its name from the spectacle of birdsong and plumage—those electric displays designed to arrest attention across a distance. That idea shapes everything: the names read like stage directions, the compositions aim for bold character, and the overall presentation carries theatrical confidence. Véronique Bourgogne-Vatar has described wanting each fragrance to feel like a distinct scene rather than a variation on a theme. Working with Bertrand Duchaufour, who brings a recognised material-forward sensibility to his compositions, the house pursues scents with clear architectural intent. The result is a collection where each piece stands apart, with distinct tonal identities rather than a house accord stretched across releases. The philosophy is essentially anti-neutral—these are perfumes that demand presence.
