A house, in its own words
Olfacto was founded by two brothers who set out to create a Filipino perfumery rooted in culture rather than trends. The house emerged from a desire to build a homegrown luxury fragrance label grounded in the Philippines, a market historically dominated by imported brands. The founders' shared vision centered on developing scents that drew from local identity and creative traditions rather than chasing global cycles. The brand made its public debut in 2019, releasing an initial slate of compositions that included Femina Negra, Akwa Negra, Outre Noir, Blaspheme, Bois Sacrés, Karo Karoundé, and Eau Fétiche. The early catalog leaned into the word "Negra," which appears across multiple 2019 launches, signaling a consistent thematic through-line from the outset. Grigio Nero followed in 2020, extending the brand's dark-toned naming approach. After a period of relative quiet, Olfacto returned with Indigene in 2024 and Kafarnaum in 2025, suggesting an ongoing evolution of the house's creative direction. The brand continues to operate as a family-founded project with cultural anchoring as its central organizing principle. Olfacto's creative vision rests on the idea that Filipino identity can serve as a legitimate foundation for luxury perfumery. The founders positioned their house as a counterpoint to trend-driven fragrance culture, choosing instead to orient compositions around cultural reference points, local language, and indigenous themes. The word "Negra," used across several early releases, and the later title "Indigene" point to a recurring concern with place, ancestry, and the particular textures of Philippine experience. Rather than pursuing a single signature style, Olfacto appears to treat each composition as an exploration of a distinct concept or narrative, with names drawn from language and history rather than from market-friendly shorthand. The house frames itself as a vehicle for cultural storytelling through scent, treating fragrance as a medium capable of carrying identity and place. This approach places the brand among a small but growing cohort of Southeast Asian houses seeking to articulate regional creative perspectives within a global luxury context.
