The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name is the concept. Bois d'Ébène, ebony wood, dark and dense and ancient. Aurélien Guichard built this fragrance around guaiac wood, one of perfumery's most distinctive materials, then reached for the earthier companions: nagarmotha with its smoky, cypress-like depth and Indonesian patchouli with its warm, slightly sweet chocolate-and-soil character. Launched in 2019, the fragrance arrived as a statement, singularity as philosophy, one idea executed completely.
Guaiac wood carries an inherent paradox. It's resinous, almost sweet, yet carries a distinctive smoky note that sets it apart from typical woody materials. Juniper berries introduce an aromatic, almost coniferous freshness at the opening, which then hands off to the heart. Nagarmotha, a close relative of vetiver, contributes earthiness and a dry, smoky quality that deepens the overall structure. Indonesian patchouli brings warmth and depth to the base, rounding out the composition. The pyramid is deliberately spare, this is not a fragrance that layers for complexity. It builds toward a single idea.
The evolution
The opening is cool and green, juniper's gift, with a clean, slightly camphorated quality that dissipates within the first hour. Then the composition shifts toward warmth as guaiac wood arrives, its signature smoky-sweet character taking over. The heart phase unfolds over the next 3-4 hours, where the combination of guaiac with nagarmotha creates something deeply resinous and earthy. By the final phase, patchouli emerges, grounding everything in dark, slightly sweet earth. On most skin types, this structure holds for 8-10 hours with moderate sillage, present without announcing itself.
