Heritage
A house, in its own words
The story of MATCA begins in 2020 in Sibiu, a city nestled in the heart of Transylvania, Romania. Georgiana Stefanoaei and Sebastian Tiplea, two creatives united by their love of natural scents and beautiful objects, established the atelier during a period when interest in indie and natural perfumery was growing across Europe. Unlike heritage houses with centuries of documented history, MATCA emerged as a contemporary voice in natural perfumery, building its identity from the ground up in a city known more for its Gothic architecture and medieval squares than its fragrance industry. The founders chose to locate their laboratory in Sibiu, a decision that ties the brand to a region with access to diverse botanical environments, from Carpathian forests to cultivated gardens. Their first releases, including Lurra, Pianista, and Oakmoss Tabac, arrived in 2020 and established an early reputation for atmospheric, nature-inspired compositions. By 2021, the brand had expanded its reach with releases like Opera 9, Woody Piperine, and House of Ellixirz, the latter marking their entry into home fragrance with three new scents. The following years brought continued output, with Midnight Honey and Peachy Bloom in 2023, and more recent additions like Dream.scapes and Metanoia in 2025. This trajectory reflects a brand that has grown through consistent releases rather than rapid scaling, maintaining its in-house production model throughout.
MATCA operates from a conviction that natural materials offer depth and complexity that synthetic compounds cannot fully replicate. The founders have spoken publicly about their passion for natural scents as the driving force behind the atelier, suggesting an approach rooted in botanical exploration rather than trend-following. This perspective shapes their creative process, where raw materials guide composition rather than predetermined market positioning. The brand name itself carries meaning, evoking the Romanian concept of a meeting point or intersection, a term that reflects how the perfumers aim to bring together different natural elements into coherent, layered fragrances. Their philosophy extends to accessibility within natural perfumery, a category sometimes associated with high price points and limited availability. By producing in their own laboratory, MATCA maintains direct oversight of quality while keeping production responsive to their creative direction. The absence of a listed perfumer suggests a collaborative or democratic approach to creation within the atelier, where formulation decisions may involve both founders rather than relying on a single named nose. This structure allows for a distinct house character to emerge across releases, even as individual fragrances explore different olfactory territories.
