Heritage
A house, in its own words
Marina Rituals traces its roots to a modest workshop in Amsterdam that opened in the late 1990s. A group of friends, united by a shared curiosity about scent as a cultural practice, began experimenting with locally sourced essential oils and imported raw materials from Malaysia and Indonesia. Their first public release, a limited‑edition amber‑spiced perfume, arrived in 2001 and was sold at a small pop‑up in the Jordaan district. Over the next decade the founders traveled to the islands of Sumatra, Borneo, and the Philippines, documenting traditional perfume rituals and gathering raw ingredients such as cempedak fruit, bergamot, and native vanilla beans. In 2010 the brand secured a partnership with a family‑run distillery in Malacca, allowing it to move from small‑batch blending to a semi‑industrial scale while preserving hand‑crafted quality. By 2015 Marina Rituals opened a modest studio in Kuala Lumpur, where a dedicated lab now houses a team of perfumers and chemists. The studio’s opening coincided with the launch of the brand’s first fragrance line explicitly named after Indonesian concepts – Wabi‑Sabi (2022) and Seá+Salt Bergamöt (2023). In 2023 the brand celebrated its 25th anniversary with a retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Craft in Amsterdam, showcasing original formula notebooks, vintage bottles, and a timeline of collaborations. The following year, Marina Rituals debuted its first physical retail space in Jakarta, a boutique designed to resemble a traditional market stall, reinforcing the brand’s commitment to ritual and community. Throughout its history the company has remained independent, refusing outside investment and maintaining a transparent supply chain that prioritizes small‑holder farmers and sustainable harvesting practices. The creative vision at Marina Rituals rests on the idea that scent can frame everyday actions as meaningful rituals. Rather than treating perfume as a decorative accessory, the brand encourages users to integrate fragrance into moments such as morning tea, evening walks, or creative work. This perspective emerged from the founders’ field research in rural villages, where perfume was woven into rites of passage, harvest celebrations, and domestic chores. Marina Rituals therefore emphasizes authenticity, locality, and storytelling. Each fragrance is paired with a short narrative that explains the cultural reference, the chosen ingredients, and the intended emotional cue. The brand also promotes a circular mindset: empty bottles are collected for refill programs, and packaging materials are sourced from recycled glass and biodegradable paper. Sustainability is not an after‑thought but a core value, reflected in the decision to work directly with cooperatives that practice shade‑grown cultivation of vanilla and organic extraction of citrus peels. The philosophy extends to the community, with the company sponsoring workshops on natural perfumery for young artisans in Malaysia and supporting research on biodiversity in the Malay Archipelago. By framing fragrance as a bridge between past and present, Marina Rituals seeks to foster a sense of belonging and mindfulness in a fast‑paced world.
