Heritage
A house, in its own words
Lillian Pulitzer Rousseau was born on November 10, 1931, in New York City. In the late 1950s she moved to Palm Beach, drawn by the region’s vibrant social scene and warm climate. While hosting a brunch in 1959, a friend asked her to create a dress from a piece of fabric she had on hand. Lillian sewed a sleeveless, bright‑orange dress with a bold, tropical print. The garment sold out at the local boutique Michele’s within hours, prompting her to launch a small clothing line that year. By the early 1960s the brand expanded beyond dresses, adding skirts, blouses and a full range of ready‑to‑wear pieces that carried the same vivid palette. The company opened its first retail store in Palm Beach in 1965 and began wholesale distribution across the United States. In 1993 Lillian sold the business to a group of investors, but the brand retained its name and design ethos. After five decades of fashion, Lilly Pulitzer entered the fragrance market in 2008, releasing three scents—Squeeze, Beachy and Wink—that echoed the brand’s breezy, citrus‑forward style. The perfume line was developed with external perfumers, using fresh fruit and floral accords to mirror the clothing’s playful spirit. In 2010 Iconix Brand Group acquired Lilly Pulitzer, providing resources for international expansion while preserving the founder’s design language. The brand celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2019 with a retrospective collection that revisited original prints and introduced limited‑edition scents. Throughout its history the company has remained rooted in the promise of "creating sunshine," a phrase that appears on its website and reflects the founder’s original intent to spread joy through color and scent. Lilly Pulitzer frames its creative vision around optimism, accessibility and a celebration of light. The brand’s statements describe a commitment to "creating sunshine" for everyday life, a goal that guides both apparel and perfume development. Rather than chase fleeting trends, the company anchors its collections in the colors of the Florida coast—bright oranges, turquoise blues and vivid pinks—that evoke warm afternoons and ocean breezes. This visual language translates into fragrance by selecting ingredients that feel fresh, playful and easy to wear, such as citrus zest, tropical fruits and soft florals. The brand values consistency; each new scent must feel like a natural extension of its clothing, offering a wearable reminder of the same carefree spirit. Community involvement also shapes its ethos: Lilly Pulitzer supports charitable programs focused on children’s health and education, reinforcing the idea that joy should be shared. By aligning design, scent and social purpose, the company presents a holistic lifestyle narrative rather than a collection of isolated products.
