Heritage
A house, in its own words
Rémi Pulverail founded L'Atelier Français des Matières in 2015 after an extended period traveling the world to source fragrance ingredients directly. During these travels, he built relationships with small-scale producers and growers of aromatic materials, establishing the supply network that would later support the laboratory. Before establishing his own house, Pulverail's professional trajectory centered on the technical and creative dimensions of perfumery. The founding of the company coincided with his move into creating finished fragrances rather than solely sourcing materials. In 2017, the house released its first collection of five perfumes, each bearing a personal dedication in its name: Ambre Stone de L'Atelier, Jasmin de Cherifa, Vetiver de Pierre, Bergamote De G. Franco, and Vanille d'Amine. The choice to honor individuals through these dedications reflects Pulverail's belief in the human connections behind fragrance ingredients. Rather than pursuing wide retail distribution, the house has maintained a focus on limited production and bespoke commissions, operating within the small-batch segment of the French fragrance industry. The integrated laboratory model sets the house apart, allowing complete control over creation and manufacturing from initial concept through final product. L'Atelier Français des Matières operates on the principle that exceptional fragrance begins with ingredient selection, drawing a direct parallel between perfume raw materials and the grands crus classification used in French winemaking. This philosophy manifests in the house's approach to sourcing, where materials are evaluated with the same rigor applied to premium agricultural products. Pulverail has spoken about ingredient origins as central to fragrance character, suggesting that understanding where and how materials grow informs creative decisions throughout development. The house positions itself against standardized fragrance production, instead pursuing an artisanal model where each creation receives individual attention. Bespoke services form a core part of the operation, allowing clients to commission fragrances tailored to specific preferences or occasions. The personal dedications embedded in the house's named releases indicate that fragrance creation at L'Atelier involves personal relationships as much as technical skill. Rather than following seasonal release cycles common in commercial fragrance, the house develops new works as opportunity and inspiration allow, maintaining a deliberately unhurried pace to creation.
