A house, in its own words
John Pegg was born into factory life in St. Clair, Michigan, approximately an hour north of Detroit. His parents worked in factories, his relatives worked in factories, and the automotive industry dominated every aspect of his community. 'Where I'm from, if you didn't work in the automobile field, you were most likely unemployed,' Pegg has explained. He followed the expected path, reluctantly enlisting in factory work and eventually advancing to a purchasing agent role, but found the repetitive nature of industrial labor deeply unfulfilling. To stay sane, he pursued creative outlets: composing music, writing abstract stories with twist endings, and learning to paint. At night, he wrenched on motorcycles, falling in love with the scents of dirt, grease, warm oil, gasoline, stamped steel, and earth. These aromatic memories became the foundation of his future brand. Before launching Kerosene, Pegg spent years as a YouTube perfume reviewer, smelling everything he could access and developing a critical understanding of what worked and what fell flat. In 2011, he debuted his first fragrance, R'oud Elements, from his Michigan workshop. A New York retailer discovered his work in 2012, providing the brand's first major retail breakthrough. Pegg has since released over twenty fragrances, maintaining full creative control and refusing to compromise his vision for commercial pressures. His story represents an unlikely journey from factory worker to internationally recognized independent perfumer. Pegg's approach to perfumery rests on three unwavering pillars: raw, unique, and approachable. These principles guide every formulation decision he makes. 'Raw' speaks to authenticity and visceral honesty; he gravitates toward materials with genuine weight and unguarded character. 'Unique' reflects his refusal to chase trends or follow conventions. Each fragrance must offer something genuinely unexpected, pushing boundaries without sacrificing wearability. 'Approachable' ensures these ambitious creations remain accessible, never alienating the wearer despite their boldness. His philosophy emerged from years of reviewing hundreds of fragrances, teaching him precisely what worked and what disappointed. Rather than pursuing complexity for its own sake, Pegg focuses on emotional resonance. He builds predominantly around warm materials naturally, drawn to amber, woods, and spices. Michigan's harsh climate, frigid for approximately seven months each year, has shaped this palette. He describes himself simply, but emphasizes that his scents will never be. This tension between Pegg's unassuming personality and the boldness of his creations defines the brand's character. His goal has always been to combine the right notes into something special, never settling for mediocrity.
