The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Myrrh & Tonka Limited Edition arrived in 2024 as a collector's bottle, a concentrated expression of Jo Malone London's layering philosophy, distilled to its most essential form. Perfumer Mathilde Bijaoui worked with the house to isolate two materials that rarely stand alone: myrrh's cool, contemplative resin and tonka bean's warm, sweet character. The idea was to create something that trusted the wearer. No florals softening the edges. No citrus brightening the top. Just two materials in conversation.
What makes this pairing interesting is the temperature contrast. Myrrh is cool, camphorated, medicinal, ancient. Tonka bean is warm, sweet, almost cherry-tobacco in its coumarin richness. Together they create an oriental structure that whispers rather than shouts. The warm-spicy, resinous character comes entirely from this interplay, not from a crowded pyramid. It's a fragrance for someone who already knows what they want.
The evolution
The opening is resin without ceremony. Myrrh arrives cool and camphorated, the kind of thing that sits at the back of the throat. No fanfare. Just the material itself, stripped back. As the scent develops, tonka begins to soften the edges, warm, sweet, almost almond-like. The heart is where these two hold their conversation. Myrrh becomes deeper, more balsamic. Tonka becomes richer, warmer. They don't build so much as deepen into each other. The drydown is intimate warmth that stays close to the skin, myrrh's balsamic quality multiplied against tonka's dry vanilla sweetness. Not loud. Not meant to be. The kind of fragrance that earns its place by staying with you.
Cultural impact
The Myrrh & Tonka Limited Edition belongs to Jo Malone London's Cologne Intense collection. Since its launch, the fragrance has belonged to the Oriental Spicy family with ambers, sweet, warm spicy, and balsamic accords. The opening is bold and resinous, commanding attention with its intensity. Its warm, balsamic character unfolds beautifully on the skin, revealing amber and sweet spice notes that make it particularly suited to cooler seasons and evening occasions where its depth can fully develop.
