The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Marie Salamagne created Incense & Cedrat in 2015 as a departure from Jo Malone London's lighter, more pastoral signatures. The pairing of bright, clean cedrat with Omani frankincense was deliberate. Cedrat brings a sharp, citrus brightness that arrives first, cutting through the air with clarity. The Omani frankincense follows, settling in with a resinous quality that remains austere rather than heavy. Together, these two notes create something unexpected, a fragrance that moves from crisp opening into deeper, more contemplative territory without ever feeling dense or overpowering.
The composition hinges on a structural inversion. This one plants light at the top and lets the warmth unfurl downward. Cedrat arrives first, sharp and clear, cutting through the air before the frankincense settles in. The Omani resin doesn't go thick and syrupy; it stays austere, almost liturgical. Vetiver in the base keeps the whole thing cool rather than warm, which is the thing that separates it from the pack. Spiritual without being heavy, the overall effect is of restraint and clarity.
The evolution
Cedrat opens bright, a flash of citrus that cuts the air before the incense arrives. Twenty minutes in, the frankincense settles and the character shifts. Not warmer exactly, but more present. The metallic, sour edge of the resin is unmistakable; it reads spiritual rather than smoky, like standing in a candlelit space rather than beside a campfire. The drydown belongs to vetiver. Cool, slightly mineral, almost green. It holds close to the skin for hours, intimate and contained. The whole arc moves quietly, with nothing announcing itself. Everything arrives on time.
Cultural impact
Incense & Cedrat occupies a specific corner of the Jo Malone range, for the wearer who wants intensity without announcement, depth without performance. Jo Malone London's version offers something more unusual: an incense that reads as cool rather than warm, spiritual rather than smoky. That quality sets it apart, offering a contemplative alternative in a category where heavier interpretations dominate.
