Heritage
A house, in its own words
J.Hannah Co. traces its origins to the work of Jessica Hannah, who built her perfume practice from a studio in San Francisco and began releasing fragrances in the mid-2010s. The earliest documented release in the brand's catalog is Skive in 2014, followed by Sunset Blvd. in 2015 and Upton in 2016. The 2018 cohort of releases, Amber Corone, Long Branch, and Hazel, expanded the line into a more complete portrait of the perfumer's sensibility and marked the period when the brand's hand-blown glass vessels and broader body-care range became more visible in editorial coverage. The founder's path into fragrance ran alongside a parallel career as an interdisciplinary artist and educator, and she has used the brand as a vehicle for teaching as well as making. Independent interviews from 2017 and onward describe her traveling from her San Francisco base to lead perfumery workshops in cities across the United States, framing J.Hannah Co. as both a product line and a pedagogical project. The house has also been featured in American perfumery profiles that document the small, craft-oriented segment of the U.S. fragrance scene, and has appeared in collaborative projects with kindred independent labels, including a perfume vessel produced with Kindred Black. Jessica Hannah's creative vision centers on the deliberate return to natural, plant-derived materials at a time when synthetic aroma molecules dominate mainstream perfumery. In interviews she has pointed out that synthetic perfumery is roughly a century old, framing J.Hannah Co. as part of a longer botanical tradition that stretches back well before the modern fragrance industry. Her work treats scent less as a luxury accessory and more as a personal ritual, which is why the line extends into ceremonial oils, anointing blends, and small-batch skincare rather than stopping at eau de parfum. The brand also operates on an educational premise. Hannah runs workshops throughout the U.S. from her San Francisco studio, teaching participants how to build fragrances from raw materials and understand the difference between natural and synthetic compositions. This dual commitment, to producing small-batch natural perfumes and to demystifying the craft for newcomers, gives the house a grounded, craft-first identity that sits comfortably alongside the more product-driven parts of the business.
