A house, in its own words
In August 2022, Samira Mbang established House of Iyrah. The brand began as a personal project rooted in her mother's experience with congenital anosmia, a condition meaning Mbang's mother was born without the ability to smell. Despite this, she maintained an appreciation for perfumery throughout her life, finding value in fragrance as an object of beauty, ritual, and emotional connection. This relationship with scent became the foundation for Mbang's approach to creating perfume. Rather than starting from a place of pure commercial ambition, House of Iyrah emerged from a desire to explore what fragrance could mean when experienced differently. The house operates as a small independent brand, with Mbang maintaining creative direction over all aspects of the label. Since its founding, House of Iyrah has released multiple fragrance collections, with releases spanning theatrical and musical themes. The brand appeared at Scentxplore, a fragrance discovery event, where it was noted as a black woman-owned business operating in the niche fragrance space. House of Iyrah positions itself as a brand that values connection over commerce, creating fragrances that carry emotional weight and personal significance. The house does not appear to have pursued external investment or large-scale distribution, instead building its audience through direct engagement and selective retail partnerships. This measured growth reflects the brand's focus on maintaining its founding vision while expanding its collection. House of Iyrah approaches perfumery as a form of storytelling. Each fragrance in the collection represents a chapter, a moment, or an emotional state that the founder wanted to capture and share. This narrative approach distinguishes the house from brands that lead with ingredient lists or market positioning. The philosophy centers on the idea that fragrance is deeply personal, tied to memory and connection in ways that transcend conventional olfactory appreciation. The brand's origin story informs this perspective directly. When someone cannot smell yet still finds meaning in fragrance, it becomes clear that scent operates on multiple levels simultaneously. House of Iyrah designs with this multi-dimensional quality in mind, creating perfumes that invite reflection on what fragrance means personally to each wearer. The house operates with a belief that perfumery should be accessible, using quality ingredients while keeping its collections intimate and focused. Rather than releasing numerous flankers or limited editions to drive urgency, House of Iyrah builds its catalog gradually, allowing each fragrance to establish its own identity within the broader collection. The brand collaborates with various perfumers to develop its compositions, bringing in external expertise while maintaining consistent creative direction. This approach allows the house to explore different olfactory territories without sacrificing coherence across the collection.
