Heritage
A house, in its own words
Jill McKeever founded For Strange Women in 2009 in the American Midwest, establishing the house as an all-female artisan perfume workshop. The conception came at a time when natural perfumery occupied a smaller niche within the broader fragrance industry, and McKeever built the brand around botanical materials rather than synthetic compounds. Over the years, the house expanded from its initial perfume oil offerings to include complementary products such as natural incense, nontoxic candles, bathing salts, and lip balms, all unified by the botanical and natural ethos. The brand developed a dedicated following through independent fragrance communities, particularly on platforms where indie and natural perfume enthusiasts share reviews and discoveries. By 2020, For Strange Women had accumulated a catalog of over 30 fragrances, including the notable release Nightshaded that year. The house operates entirely in-house, handling both production and order fulfillment from its workshop, which allows direct oversight of quality and authenticity. McKeever has maintained the all-female identity of the company throughout its history, building a team that shares the same foundational approach to botanical perfumery. The brand's longevity into its second decade reflects both consistent craft and the growing consumer interest in natural and artisanal fragrance alternatives.
For Strange Women operates from the conviction that botanical materials offer depth and complexity unavailable in synthetic compositions. The house selects plant-derived aromatics from international sources, prioritizing natural origin over manufactured alternatives. Sustainability informs the brand's sourcing decisions, as the team seeks to maintain ethical relationships with suppliers and minimize environmental impact throughout the supply chain. McKeever has described the creative process as rooted in traditional perfumery techniques, relying on the inherent properties of natural materials rather than technological shortcuts. The all-female structure of the company reflects a deliberate organizational choice rather than an incidental detail, shaping team dynamics and shared aesthetic sensibility. Each fragrance undergoes development through iterative refinement, allowing botanical components to reveal their character over time rather than forcing predetermined outcomes. The house resists trends in favor of enduring composition, releasing new works infrequently to ensure each creation receives appropriate attention. This measured approach extends to the product line, which has expanded gradually rather than aggressively, maintaining coherence across the catalog.
