A house, in its own words
Essence of Chi draws from centuries of Chinese elemental philosophy, where Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water have long served as a framework for understanding balance, energy, and the natural world. The brand channeled this ancient system into modern perfumery, treating each element as both a creative concept and a compositional guide. The house launched its core elemental collection in 2014 with five fragrances, each one a study of a single element rendered through scent. Water, Wood, Fire, Earth, and Metal arrived as a set, presenting elemental forces as olfactory portraits rather than literal depictions. In 2016, the brand expanded its vision with Annuals, a limited release that introduced a temporal dimension to the elemental approach, exploring fragrance as something that changes and matures with the passing of a season or a year. Alongside its elemental line, Essence of Chi developed a bespoke service rooted in the Chinese zodiac, the twelve-year cycle of animal signs that has shaped personal identity in Chinese culture for generations. The concept was simple but ambitious: create a perfume tailored to an individual's zodiac sign, blending the house's elemental thinking with personal astrology. At the heart of Essence of Chi is a belief that scent can express something more elemental than mood or style. The house works with the five phases of Chinese cosmology, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water, as a living system in which each element generates, challenges, and nourishes the next. Fragrance becomes a way of engaging with that cycle. Rather than chasing trends or building a sprawling catalog, the brand has chosen a narrow, focused path. Five elements. One zodiac-based bespoke concept. A limited annual release. This restraint reflects a creative vision shaped by Chinese aesthetic principles, where emptiness, contrast, and balance carry as much meaning as abundance. The zodiac bespoke service takes this philosophy further. Instead of offering a menu of options, the house creates something singular for each client, mapping personality and elemental affinity into a composition that belongs to one person. The result is fragrance treated not as a product but as a personal artifact.
