Heritage
A house, in its own words
Elemis was founded in London in 1989 by Linda Steiner, alongside Sean Harrington, Oriele Frank, and Noella Gabriel. Steiner, an entrepreneur and investor, set out to build a skincare line as close to nature and as driven by aromatherapy principles as possible, while Gabriel brought formal aromatherapy training to the formulation process. From the start, the brand was conceived as a treatment house first, with retail products designed to extend the results of professional spa rituals rather than stand apart from them. The early years were defined by partnerships with leading British spas, including a long-running collaboration with London's House of Elemis super-clinic concept, which became a proving ground for new formulations. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Elemis built a reputation in professional skincare circles, eventually expanding into hotels, cruise lines, and department store counters worldwide. In 2010, the brand made its formal move into fragrance with two debut scents: Elemis Eau de Parfum and Elemis Exotic Eau de Parfum. These marked the first time the house's aromatherapy heritage was channeled into standalone eau de parfum formats. More recently, a global rebrand by School House has given the company a refreshed visual identity while preserving its British heritage positioning. At the core of Elemis's approach is the idea that skincare and fragrance are inseparable from the senses. The brand builds formulations around aromatherapy principles, considering how scent, texture, and touch interact rather than treating them as separate variables. This sensory-first thinking shaped both its treatment-room protocols and, later, its move into standalone fragrance. Co-founder Noella Gabriel has spoken publicly about her aromatherapy background and how it informs product development, from ingredient selection to the emotional profile of a finished scent. The brand's creative direction leans into botanical authenticity, favoring naturally derived extracts and essential oils over synthetic shortcuts whenever possible. Elemis also views its products as extensions of its spa rituals. Rather than developing fragrance in isolation, the house approaches scent as another channel through which its wellness philosophy can be experienced. This positioning places Elemis somewhere between a traditional perfumer and a treatment brand, an unusual hybrid that defines much of how it talks about and formulates its scents.
