Heritage
A house, in its own words
Barros emerged from São Paulo's fragrance community as both a writer and creator. His work as a Fragrantica contributor established his voice among international fragrance enthusiasts before he expanded into authorship with "1001 Perfumes: The Guide," a 500-page survey of perfumery history and culture that reviewers describe as a comprehensive reference for Portuguese-language readers. The book covers entries from 1881 Cerruti through contemporary releases, offering fragrance prose that contextualizes compositions within their historical moment. Beyond publishing, Barros founded Ego In Vitro, a consultancy practice that applies structured methodology to fragrance matching. His 2016 collection of ten fragrances marked his debut as a nose, with each scent carrying a specific conceptual anchor. Rather than emerging from a traditional perfumery background, Barros built his reputation through accessible writing and consumer-facing consultation work, positioning himself as a bridge between industry expertise and everyday fragrance enthusiasm in Brazil and beyond.
Barros approaches fragrance as a vehicle for cultural storytelling rather than purely technical exercise. His 2016 collection illustrates this philosophy: Caipiroud draws from Brazilian cachaça culture, Yuzucello references Japanese-Brazilian yuzu applications, and Choco Frap captures the sensory experience of chocolate beverages. He builds fragrances around specific memories or cultural touchstones, inviting wearers to recognize familiar experiences translated into olfactory form. His consultancy practice, Ego In Vitro, reinforces this person-centered approach by matching scents to individual identity rather than promoting particular products. Barros has spoken on luxury positioning within the Brazilian fragrance market, offering perspective on accessibility and cultural relevance in contemporary perfumery. His writing avoids heavy technical jargon, preferring to communicate fragrance concepts in terms that resonate with general readers rather than industry insiders.
