A house, in its own words
Cygnet Perfumery is the singular creation of Sondrine Kehoe, a botanical perfumer based in South Gippsland, Victoria. The brand grew from Kehoe's lifelong passion for crafting exquisite perfumes and skincare from plants, a calling she pursued before formally establishing the label. The name itself carries meaning rooted in the natural world, with Kehoe drawing inspiration from ancient Tasmanian pines, botanicals that seem to echo in the quiet forested character of the fragrances themselves. Kehoe founded Cygnet Perfumery as a perfumer-owned and operated venture, determined to keep every step close at hand. The early years were spent developing a focused catalogue rather than chasing scale, an approach that allowed her to refine formulations until each one met her standards. The current lineup, described by the founder as a small collection of six fragrant spirits housed in delicate vessels, reflects this measured philosophy. Kehoe wears both the founder and perfumer titles, meaning the creative direction and the compounding bench belong to the same pair of hands. South Gippsland, a region of rolling green farmland and cool temperate forests, informs the house's aesthetic sensibility. Kehoe has spoken about the influence of her surroundings on the raw materials she gravitates toward and the mood she seeks to capture. Rather than positioning the brand against larger commercial houses, Kehoe frames Cygnet Perfumery as a craft practice, one where botanical knowledge, patience, and personal taste set the terms. Cygnet Perfumery operates on a simple but demanding premise: perfume and skincare made in-house with the finest 100% natural ingredients. For Kehoe, this is not a marketing angle but a working method that shapes every formulation decision. She selects plants for their aromatic character and skin affinity, then composes extrait de parfums that carry both intensity and transparency, qualities that require concentrated natural materials and a careful hand. Kehoe's creative vision centers on fragrance as an extension of the plant world rather than a representation of it. She seeks to express botanical material with respect for its original character, allowing individual notes to retain their identity within a composition. This approach distinguishes Cygnet Perfumery within the broader landscape of botanical perfumery, where abstraction and fidelity can sit in productive tension. Her own favorite in the line, Vigneron, has been described in reviews as a niche, character-driven scent that reflects her mature taste. The house also values restraint in its output. A collection of six fragrances is unusual by industry standards, where dozens or hundreds of SKUs are common. Kehoe treats each release as a deliberate addition rather than a seasonal obligation. Her dual commitment to perfumery and botanical skincare reinforces a holistic view of how plant materials can serve both beauty and fragrance, two practices that share a vocabulary but rarely a production floor.
