Heritage
A house, in its own words
Candice Jurko's journey into fragrance began in 2001, when she began seeking out less mainstream scents, particularly artisan and artistic compositions that stood apart from commercial offerings. Her interest deepened over the following years, eventually leading her to start blending her own fragrances in 2005, driven by a desire to create scents she couldn't find elsewhere. What began as personal experimentation grew into CJ Scents, a small independent house offering handblended perfumes and oils sold through the brand's own website. Over time, the house built a loyal collector base. One longtime customer noted collecting over 25 bottles and wearing the fragrances for more than 13 years, a testament to the brand's enduring appeal among repeat buyers. The catalog grew to include 33 creations spanning several years of creative development, covering a range of styles from warm gourmands to woodier, more atmospheric compositions. By the mid-2010s, CJ Scents had established itself within the American indie perfume community, with its fragrances appearing in collector databases and discussions among indie fragrance enthusiasts on platforms like Reddit's r/Indiemakeupandmore. The brand has maintained a direct-to-consumer model throughout its history, offering both full-size 15 ml limited edition parfum sprays and 2 ml sample sprays, a format that allows curious buyers to explore the catalog before committing to larger bottles. This approach reflects the house's grounding in the indie fragrance world, where small-batch production and personal customer relationships are central to how the business operates. CJ Scents operates on a simple premise: create handblended perfumes that are simply beautiful. The house's creative vision centers on crafting accessible yet distinctive fragrances, with a particular fondness for gourmand and comforting scent profiles. Vanilla serves as a signature element throughout many compositions, appearing as a base note in multiple fragrances and forming the foundation of dedicated scents like Vanilla Incense and the Vanilla Scent Bar. This focus on warmth, sweetness, and wearability reflects an understanding of what draws many indie fragrance lovers to artisan perfumery in the first place. The brand's approach emphasizes personal expression over mass-market trends. By offering parfum oils alongside traditional sprays, CJ Scents caters to fragrance enthusiasts who appreciate different application methods and scent experiences. The house also values the exploratory aspect of fragrance discovery, providing 2 ml sample sprays as a gateway to the full-size collection, an approach that respects the buyer's desire to test before investing. Candice Jurko's own path, from fragrance appreciator to blender to brand founder, informs the house's identity as a creator-driven project rather than a corporate venture. The brand remains closely tied to its founder's tastes and creative direction, which gives it an authenticity that resonates with collectors who prioritize artistic integrity over commercial polish.
