Heritage
A house, in its own words
The story of Caudalie began in Bordeaux, at Château Smith Haut Lafitte, the estate belonging to Mathilde Thomas's parents. Mathilde and Bertrand Thomas spent time at the family property in the early 1990s, surrounded by the rhythms of the wine harvest. During this period, they noticed something notable about the vineyard workers. Despite years of sun exposure and manual labor, their hands appeared remarkably youthful. The couple investigated and discovered that the workers were constantly in contact with grape seeds, which are rich in polyphenols. These compounds protect the grape from oxidation, and the couple theorized they could offer similar benefits to human skin. The discovery connected to their family background in winemaking, where grape seeds had long been part of the process. The name Caudalie was drawn from a viticultural concept: a caudalies measures the time between the harvest of a grape and the moment it falls from the vine. This represented the idea of preserving youth and vitality at the optimal point. The couple founded the company in 1995 and developed their first product using stabilized grape seed extract, patented through their collaboration with the University of Bordeaux. The skincare line expanded over the years, followed by body care and a fragrance collection that began with Fleur de Vigne in 2002. The brand remains family owned and French at its core.
Caudalie builds its products around the protective qualities of the grapevine. The founders observed that grape seeds contain powerful polyphenols that shield the fruit from oxidation, and they developed a science-based approach to applying these properties to skincare and fragrance. The brand centers on natural ingredients and botanical composition. Each product draws from the vine, translating the plant's defensive mechanisms into benefits for human skin. The fragrance collection, developed by Mathilde Thomas, uses vine and grape notes as a recurring creative foundation. The approach emphasizes botanical and natural ingredients across the range. This extends to their formulation standards, which exclude certain synthetic ingredients, and their packaging choices, designed to reduce environmental impact. The philosophy combines scientific research with the sensory pleasure of natural fragrances. Every Caudalie fragrance aims to express a facet of the vine, grounded in botanical ingredients rather than synthetic compounds.
