The beginning
Bond No. 9's concept was simple and radical: make every fragrance a neighborhood. West Broadway, the downtown Manhattan corridor, gets its turn in 2003. Lime opens the composition, green and immediate. Lily of the valley follows, soft and powdery. Musk anchors the base, warm and close. Three notes. One street. The idea was to translate that specific downtown stretch, galleries, design studios, the moment when SoHo's industrial past becomes something else entirely, into something wearable.
Three notes don't usually build a fragrance this complete. The lime opening is bright and tart, the kind of citrus that announces rather than whispers. But it's the musk that makes this interesting. It doesn't just linger in the base. It pulls the lime and lily into something warmer, closer to skin than to air. And then there's the cardamom thread that some wearers catch, a spice that surfaces on certain skin types, adding an unexpected warmth to what starts as clean and green. Whether the perfumers at Robertet intended it or whether it just happens on skin is part of what makes this worth discovering.
The evolution
The opening is immediate: lime cutting through clean and tart. No softening, no preamble. Within the first hour, lily of the valley arrives, powdery, floral, shifting the energy from sharp to soft. The green doesn't disappear. It settles. By the late drydown, eight to ten hours in, the lime is a memory and the lily has faded into a clean musk that reads as skin rather than perfume. On fabric, it softens further, less green, more warmth. The day version is bright and close. The night version, if you let it develop, is warmer, more intimate.
Cultural impact
Bond No. 9 built its identity on neighborhood-as-perfume, turning New York's geography into luxury goods. West Broadway captures the downtown creative corridor, the stretch between industrial SoHo and the gallery scene. This was an early expression of the brand's neighborhood concept, released in 2003 alongside their debut fragrances. The sillage stays moderate throughout, it announces briefly, then settles into proximity. Intimate rather than theatrical.
