Heritage
A house, in its own words
The story of Bahfamsn begins in the town of Kota Kinabalu, where a group of local enthusiasts decided to translate the scents of their surroundings into bottled perfume. In 2020 they formalised the venture, choosing the name Bahfamsn to reflect a personal connection to the region’s rivers and families. Early development focused on sourcing raw materials from nearby farms and forest cooperatives, a practice that helped the fledgling house avoid the mass‑production model common in larger markets. By late 2021 the brand had launched an Instagram account (@bahfamsn_fragrance) that now showcases more than three hundred posts of product shots, field trips, and community events. The following year, 2022, marked the release of its first full collection, a line of ten fragrances each named after a distinct Bornean landmark or cultural reference – Luwak Touch, Morning In Kundasang, Mui Eng, Amber Ora, Butter Batik Cake, Borneo Tea, Ungu, My Village And Siberian Musk, I Found Lemon In Desaru, and Nusantara. The launch was accompanied by a modest press release and a series of pop‑up tastings in local cafés, which helped the brand gain a foothold among niche fragrance collectors. Throughout 2023 the house expanded its logistics network, announcing worldwide shipping on its social channels and beginning to fulfil orders across Europe and North America. In 2024, according to the brand’s own updates, Bahfamsn began collaborating with a small cooperative of indigenous weavers to create hand‑stitched pouch inserts for its bottles, further embedding local craft into its product experience. Each milestone reflects a deliberate pace, allowing the company to refine its formulas, deepen community ties, and maintain the artisanal ethos that defined its inception. Bahfamsn frames perfume as a bridge between place and memory. The founders believe that scent can capture the humidity of a Bornean rainforest, the sweetness of a sunrise over Mount Kinabalu, or the quiet of a village tea ceremony. Their creative vision prioritises authenticity over trend, seeking ingredients that are native to the island and harvested with respect for the ecosystem. The brand’s values include sustainability, community empowerment, and transparency; every ingredient list is published alongside a brief note on its origin. Rather than chasing fleeting fashion statements, Bahfamsn aims to create olfactory snapshots that invite wearers to pause and recall a specific moment in nature. This approach informs everything from fragrance naming to packaging, reinforcing a narrative that each bottle is both a personal artifact and a tribute to Borneo’s biodiversity.
