Heritage
A house, in its own words
Anya McCoy launched her first perfume line, Anya's Tropical Essences, in South Beach, Miami in 1991. At that time, natural perfumery represented a niche corner of an industry dominated by synthetic materials, making her early commitment to botanical ingredients an unconventional choice. The Natural Perfumers Guild credits McCoy with founding the USA's first modern natural perfume line, a distinction that positioned her as a pioneering figure in the American natural fragrance movement. In 2006, she debuted her second perfume house, Anya's Garden Perfumes, marking both a continuation and an evolution of her work. That same year, McCoy became President of the Natural Perfumers Guild, a role she has held since 2006. Her contributions to the craft extend beyond her own brand through teaching. According to records from the Natural Perfumery Institute, McCoy has nurtured thousands of perfumers since 2002, working with students both privately and through public instruction. Her fragrances from this period include Fairchild and River Cali (originally Riverside), both released in 2006. The Natural Perfumers Guild, which she now leads, was established in 2007 as an organization dedicated to supporting practitioners of natural perfumery. McCoy's nearly three-decade career spans the entirety of the modern natural perfume revival in the United States, making her one of the longest continuously operating independent natural perfumers in the country.
Anya's Garden operates on the conviction that natural perfumery offers an irreplaceable sensory experience rooted in authentic botanical materials. Rather than relying on synthetic compounds, the brand works exclusively with natural essential oils, absolutes, and plant-derived tinctures to construct its fragrances. This approach means each perfume carries the inherent complexity of living materials, including the subtle variations that occur based on harvest conditions, geographic origin, and seasonal changes. McCoy has described her fragrances as beginning at the age of three, a reference to her lifelong engagement with aromatic materials that predates her formal career. Her role as an educator shapes the brand's philosophy, as the work of nurturing new perfumers has reinforced her commitment to traditional methods and material integrity. The Natural Perfumers Guild, under her leadership, promotes standards and practices that distinguish natural perfumery from conventional fragrance production. This dual identity as both creator and educator informs how Anya's Garden approaches fragrance composition, emphasizing transparency about ingredients and an artisanal understanding of how botanical materials interact over time on the skin.
