Heritage
A house, in its own words
Annie Oakley Perfumery was founded in 1980 in Indiana by Renee Gabet, a perfumer and entrepreneur who saw an opportunity to create a fragrance line rooted in the mythology of the American West. From its earliest days, the company positioned itself as a pioneer in Western and cowgirl-themed fragrances, a niche that did not previously exist in the American market. Gabet began by hand-blending perfumes and colognes in small batches, building the business from a modest Indiana workshop into a nationally recognized name. Over the decades, the company has expanded its offerings to include body sprays, lotions, and other personal care products, all carrying the same frontier-inspired identity. The perfumery is based in Ligonier, a small town in northern Indiana that has become an unexpected destination for fragrance enthusiasts and tourists alike. By the company's own account, more than 2 million bottles of perfume and body products have been sold since its founding, a figure that reflects both the longevity of the brand and the loyalty of its customer base. The house has retained its independent, family-run character even as it has grown, and it remains one of the few American perfumeries that produces its own fragrances on-site in a dedicated studio. At Annie Oakley Natural Perfumery, the guiding idea is that fragrance can carry a sense of place and cultural identity. The company draws on the imagery, landscapes, and traditions of the American West, translating those themes into scents that evoke open country, saddle leather, wildflowers, and fresh air. Gabet has spoken about wanting to create perfumes that feel distinctly American rather than imitative of European houses, and the brand's identity is built around that ambition. The philosophy extends beyond scent into the experience of the perfumery itself, which is designed to be visited, smelled, and explored rather than simply purchased. Visitors are invited to tour the studio, learn about the blending process, and engage with the raw materials that go into each formulation. This openness reflects a belief that fragrance is a craft that should be accessible and participatory, not locked behind a retail counter. The brand also emphasizes natural ingredients and artisanal methods, positioning itself in contrast to mass-market synthetic perfumery.
