Heritage
A house, in its own words
Aman was founded in 1988 by Vlad Doronin, a Russian businessman who envisioned a chain of ultra-luxury resorts and hotels distinguished by their intimate scale and discretion. The name Aman derives from the Sanskrit word for peace, reflecting the brand ethos that has guided its properties for over three decades. The group grew from its first property in Phuket into a portfolio of properties spanning some of the world's most desirable locations, from Bali to the Himalayas, the Caribbean to the American Southwest. In 2021, Aman announced its entry into fine perfumery, a natural extension for a brand whose identity is rooted in sensory immersion and place-making. The fragrance project reportedly took years of development, with Doronin traveling to France to work closely with the collection's creator at the perfumer's laboratory. This personal involvement in the creative process marks the fragrance line as a considered expansion rather than a licensing exercise. The launch positioned Aman alongside established luxury fragrance houses while maintaining the exclusivity and understated character associated with the brand.
The Aman Fine Fragrance collection centers on the idea of transport. Rather than constructing abstract olfactory compositions, the line aims to evoke specific places and moments associated with Aman properties. This approach treats fragrance as a memory trigger, a way of revisiting a beloved destination or experiencing one for the first time through scent. Jacques Chabert, the collection's creator, was born in Grasse and approached the project with a philosophy of emotional engagement. The collection was designed not only to evoke emotion through the ability to transport the wearer, but to provide an ongoing narrative between the fragrance and its owner. Doronin described the collection as having an artistic dimension, with each scent carrying the character of its inspirational destination. The overall aesthetic avoids the performative excess common to luxury perfumery in favor of subtlety and refinement, mirroring the architectural restraint and uncluttered luxury of Aman hotels themselves. Each fragrance is intended to feel intimate rather than declarative, suited to personal wear rather than social signaling.
