Heritage
A house, in its own words
Beckielou Brown and Bridget Plant established Altra as a shared creative venture rooted in their longstanding friendship. Both women, described as lifelong friends, founded the company around their mutual interest in creating natural scents. The partnership combines Brown's expertise as perfume creator with Plant's involvement as co-founder, forming a female-led business in an industry where such representation remains relatively uncommon. The founding philosophy centered on a desire to work with natural materials rather than synthetic compounds, a direction that shapes every aspect of their product development. Brown has spoken publicly about the ecosystem surrounding Altra, discussing the brand's approach down to its molecular level in interviews about natural fragrance creation. Beyond perfumery, Brown has connections to the architectural world, having spent time at Neuendorf House in Majorca, a property designed by architects that she described as a source of creative inspiration. The brand gained visibility through fragrance community events, with Brown participating in sampling gatherings in cities like Glasgow. Altra's growth has been organic, building a reputation through word-of-mouth within niche fragrance circles rather than through mass-market distribution. The co-founders maintain direct involvement in formulation and brand direction, ensuring continuity between their stated philosophy and actual products. Altra operates on the principle that natural ingredients offer a different kind of fragrance experience than synthetic alternatives. Brown, as the primary perfumer, approaches each creation with an emphasis on what natural materials can achieve when handled carefully. The brand rejects the conventional industry reliance on synthetic base notes and artificial fixatives, instead building compositions around the behavior of real botanicals. This philosophy extends to transparency, with the founders willing to discuss the sourcing and characteristics of their raw materials. The natural fragrance space presents particular challenges, including consistency variations between harvests and higher costs for quality ingredients, but Altra accepts these constraints as inherent to their chosen approach. The co-founders share a belief that perfume should connect wearers to something tangible, rather than delivering an abstract chemical experience. Their work reflects an ecological awareness, considering not just the scent profile of ingredients but their environmental and ethical dimensions. The brand represents a return to pre-industrial perfumery values, when all fragrances were naturally derived by necessity. Brown has articulated this perspective in interviews, framing natural perfumery as both a craft tradition and a contemporary choice that reflects certain values about authenticity and sustainability.
