A house, in its own words
Christine and Niclas Lydeen established Agonist in 2008, marking their entry into the niche fragrance world with an ambitious artistic premise. The couple approached perfumery as a form of sculptural expression, treating scent as a three-dimensional medium capable of capturing mood, memory, and movement. The brand launched initially with a single fragrance, gradually expanding its collection over the following years. By 2018, the house had reached 17 releases, a milestone celebrated during a triple fragrance launch marking the 10th anniversary. The Lydeens have maintained creative control over the brand throughout its growth, overseeing both the artistic direction and the conceptual framework behind each new composition. Their Swedish roots inform the brand's restrained aesthetic and its preference for clean, contemplative fragrance narratives rather than opulent, statement-making scents. Agonist operates from the conviction that fragrance and visual art share a common language of form, texture, and emotional resonance. The brand explicitly explores the interplay between perfume and sculptured art, positioning each fragrance as a wearable interpretation of artistic themes. This conceptual grounding sets Agonist apart from houses that emphasize ingredient provenance or perfumer celebrity. Instead, the Lydeens treat fragrance as a medium for storytelling, drawing inspiration from abstract ideas, literary references, and artistic movements. The unisex approach reflects a broader philosophy of inclusivity, rejecting gendered marketing in favor of scents that transcend traditional categories. Collections are presented as cohesive bodies of work rather than isolated releases, encouraging wearers to explore relationships between different compositions.
