The 4711 story began in October 1792, when Wilhelm Mülhens received an extraordinary wedding gift: a secret recipe for a citrus "miracle water" he would name after his new Cologne home at Glockengasse 4711. The formula drew from the Italian tradition Johann Maria Farina established in 1709, but Mülhens crafted something distinctively German in spirit. By 1799, production was firmly established in Cologne, and the brand secured protected designation as an original Eau de Cologne producer. For over two centuries, the Mülhens family guarded their recipe while the brand became synonymous with German craftsmanship and refreshing simplicity. Napoleon occupied Cologne in 1806 and reportedly claimed the building for France, numbering it among his possessions. Mäurer & Wirtz assumed ownership in 1990, preserving the brand's heritage while modernizing production. The Cool collection launched in 2014, extending the house's citrus expertise into practical dab-on formats for contemporary lifestyles. Throughout its history, 4711 has remained true to its founding promise: accessible, invigorating freshness rooted in real ingredients and time-honored technique. 4711 operates from a straightforward conviction: fragrance should refresh, not overwhelm.
