Thierry de Bashmakoff
Thierry de Baschmakoff has spent more than three decades shaping how modern niche perfumery presents itself, though not from behind the organ. Born in Grasse with a European heritage spiked by Slavic bloodlines (he jokes about being twenty-five percent of four different origins), he grew up among the raw material fields and processing houses that made the town the historical capital of scent. Rather than train formally at a perfumery school, he moved into the creative and strategic side of the industry, learning fragrance from the manufacturing side, from packaging, from brand architecture. In 2000, he co-founded The Different Company in Paris alongside the legendary Jean-Claude Ellena, building a house devoted to a stripped-back, design-led idea of luxury. Earlier in his career, he developed the Collection 1808 project, drawing on historical perfumery references. His reputation rests less on individual formulas and more on his ability to frame how a perfume is conceived, packaged, and introduced to the world.
