Renier R. Mendez
Renier R. Mendez grew up amid the vibrant streets of the Caribbean’s largest island, the third generation of a family of plastic artists. As a child he pressed his nose to his mother’s garden, dreaming of translating color into scent. Formal schools were out of reach, so he taught himself by dissecting vintage bottles, swapping notes with local artisans, and devouring every manual he could find. By his early twenties he began experimenting in a modest studio beside his paintbrushes, where the first crude blends hinted at a future beyond canvas. In 2023 he launched Renier Perfumes, a boutique house that mirrors his visual practice. The debut release, Baracoa, arrived in 2024 and announced his arrival on the niche stage, earning praise for its daring mix of cognac, pineapple and honey. Today he balances exhibitions with fragrance launches, positioning scent as another medium in his artistic dialogue.

How Renier composes
Renier’s technique leans on raw, locally sourced materials that echo his island roots. He favors natural absolutes—coconut, tropical woods, and sea salt—paired with unexpected gourmand accents like cognac and honey. In the lab he works hands‑on, measuring by eye and adjusting with a painter’s instinct rather than strict formulae. He often builds a fragrance in three acts: an opening that flashes like a first brush of light, a heart that unfolds like a layered glaze, and a base that lingers like a varnish protecting the work. This approach yields scents that feel both tactile and emotional, inviting the wearer to explore texture as much as aroma.
Philosophy
What drives Renier
Renier treats fragrance as a palette, each ingredient a pigment that can be layered, brushed, or left to bleed. He believes scent should provoke the same visceral response as a bold brushstroke, capturing memory and mood in a single breath. His creative impulse stems from childhood curiosity and the rhythm of Caribbean life—sun‑soaked mornings, sea breezes, and the hum of market stalls. He refuses to follow trends; instead he follows the scent that feels true to the story he wants to tell. For Renier, a perfume is a compact exhibition, a moment frozen in time that invites the wearer to become part of the artwork.
