René Morgenthaler
René Morgenthaler's career traces a remarkable arc from apprentice to industry leader. He launched his journey in Geneva, entering Givaudan's apprenticeship program in chemistry before rising through the house's ranks with a rare combination of technical mastery and creative vision. By 1989, he had claimed the titles of Senior Vice President and Chief Perfumer, positions he held for twelve years. His tenure at Givaudan produced landmark work, including CK be for Calvin Klein, a fragrance that redefined accessible luxury and became a defining cultural touchstone. After leaving the house in 2001, Morgenthaler continued his independent practice before co-founding Smart Fragrances LLC in 2009, where he remains active as a Master Perfumer.

Philosophy
What drives René
Morgenthaler treats fragrance as both science and poetry. He believes in building from reliable principles rather than chasing trends, grounding his creative process in technical foundations while leaving room for intuitive leaps. His philosophy centers on creating emotional resonance through precise formulation, viewing each composition as a problem to solve and a story to tell simultaneously.
