The Story
Why it exists.
Born from d'Annam’s Chapter 2: Memories of Japan, Hinoki Meditation was conceived in 2024 by Vietnamese perfumer Anh Ngo. The brief called for a scent that could translate the serene ritual of Japanese hinoki bathing into a modern Eau de Parfum. Drawing on the house’s philosophy of turning personal memory into fragrance, the formula blends native cypress, forest green accords and warm spices to evoke a quiet, meditative space.

The Beginning
Born from d'Annam’s Chapter 2: Memories of Japan, Hinoki Meditation was conceived in 2024 by Vietnamese perfumer Anh Ngo. The brief called for a scent that could translate the serene ritual of Japanese hinoki bathing into a modern Eau de Parfum. Drawing on the house’s philosophy of turning personal memory into fragrance, the formula blends native cypress, forest green accords and warm spices to evoke a quiet, meditative space.
Hinoki cypress gives crisp, resinous clarity reminiscent of Japanese temple woods, while cryptomeria adds a subtle marine green nuance. The spice accord injects a bright peppery spark, preventing static. Frankincense brings a smoky incense veil, and sandalwood grounds the drydown with creamy warmth, delivering a balanced progression from sharp to soothing.
The Evolution
At first spray, the fragrance bursts with a lively blend of spices, crisp cypress and a green forest accord that feels like a brisk walk through mist‑laden woods. Within the first half hour, the aromatic heart of Hinoki cypress emerges, joined by cryptomeria’s subtle marine green, creating a focused, almost meditative calm. As the scent settles after about an hour, frankincense introduces a smoky veil that adds depth without heaviness. By the second hour, sandalwood takes over, softening the composition with creamy, lingering warmth that clings to skin for the remainder of the day. The drydown remains present but unobtrusive, offering a quiet, lingering reminder of the initial forest meditation long after the initial spice has faded.
Cultural Impact
Hinoki Meditation reflects a growing appreciation for cultural authenticity in modern perfumery, echoing Japan’s reverence for nature and Vietnam’s aromatic traditions. By integrating Hinoki cypress, a symbol of Japanese temples, with spice notes reminiscent of Vietnamese markets, the fragrance bridges two distinct yet complementary heritage streams. This cross‑cultural dialogue resonates with consumers seeking depth beyond fleeting trends, encouraging a broader conversation about how scent can honor and reinterpret regional identities.
The House
Vietnam · Est. 2023
d'Annam is a Vietnamese fine fragrance house founded in 2023 by Nick Hoang. The brand creates gender-neutral scents that translate personal memories and cultural landscapes into olfactory experiences. Its debut collection, Chapter 1, comprises nine fragrances inspired by Vietnamese heritage, while a second collection explores the aesthetics of Japan. Hoang collaborated with perfumer Anh Ngo and the global fragrance supplier IFF to develop the house's formulations, producing scents that reference experiences like Vietnamese coffee, rice paddies, forest oud, and street pho alongside Japanese whiskey and oolong tea. The brand packages its fragrances in recycled materials and directs a portion of revenue toward children's charities in Vietnam. d'Annam operates at the intersection of personal nostalgia and cultural storytelling, positioning itself as a voice for Asian scent experiences within the niche fragrance market.
