The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Iris d'Élite arrived in 2021 as part of the Atelier Versace collection. Jordi Fernández built this one around a tension: the cool, almost mineral clarity of Italian iris against the warm, gourmand depth of tonka bean. The iris accord opens with a clean, powdery brightness that feels mineral and slightly chalky, like the inside of a geode. As it settles, the tonka bean emerges, bringing its characteristic warmth, sweet, slightly vanillic, with a soft hay-like quality that rounds the edges of the iris without overpowering it. The two notes play off each other in a way that feels both airy and substantial, the mineral coolness of the iris keeping the tonka from becoming too heavy, while the tonka keeps the iris from reading as purely cosmetic.
What makes this structure interesting is the absence of the obvious iris companions. No orris butter, no violet leaf, just the root, the earth, the quiet powder of iris itself. The amber in the base provides a soft, resinous warmth that lingers behind the iris and tonka, giving the fragrance a gentle persistence on the skin. Over time, the fragrance settles into a skin-warm quality, the tonka bean softening the iris's natural mineral edge as the top notes fade. The drydown is subtle, leaving a faint trace of powder and sweetness that feels intimate rather than projecting.
The evolution
The opening is quick, a matter of minutes before the iris settles and the tonka bean begins its slow, warm climb. The amber holds throughout, never overwhelming, acting more like a base layer than a highlight. By hour three, the composition has flattened into a close, powdery warmth that stays within arm's reach rather than projecting outward. On fabric, it outlives the skin by several hours, still present the next morning as a quiet, sweet trace.
Cultural impact
Iris d'Élite is powder-forward, warm, unapologetically sweet. The fragrance combines the intimacy of a skin scent with the warmth of a gourmand composition, offering a soft, lingering presence. Community reception skews positive on longevity and sillage, with criticism aimed primarily at price rather than scent character. The powdery iris accord is the dominant feature, supported by the sweet, warm tonka bean that gives the fragrance its gourmand quality.
