A house, in its own words
Taffin began in 1996 as a New York salon founded by James de Givenchy, a member of the extended Givenchy family who carved an independent path into jewelry design rather than fashion. For roughly two and a half decades, the house operated exclusively as a jewelry brand, building a reputation for sculptural pieces with a distinct architectural language. De Givenchy had reportedly been conceiving a fragrance line since the jewelry brand's early days, but waited to bring it to life until the timing and creative direction aligned. The fragrance collection finally debuted in 2022, introducing a series of color-coded compositions, each given a numerical title. Among the earliest releases were Le Rose N°1905, Le Gris N°0421, Le Vert N°7732, Le Rouge N°1795, L'Orange N°021, and Le Jaune N°1235, followed by Le Bleu N°300 in 2023. The line expanded in 2024 with Ce Fut un Moment, a departure from the numbered color series. The house's Latin motto, 'Le Fin Couronne l'Oeuvre' (the end crowns the work), serves as a guiding principle carried over from the jewelry salon into the fragrance world. Taffin approaches fragrance the way its parent house approaches jewelry: as a medium for personal expression and quiet distinction rather than trend-driven marketing. Each composition is named after a color paired with a number, suggesting an almost archival or cataloguing sensibility, as though the scents are entries in a private color library. The numbered titles invite wearers to think of scent as a collectible vocabulary, something to be chosen with the same deliberateness as selecting a piece of jewelry. De Givenchy's creative vision treats perfumery as an extension of visual and material culture. The compositions aim for distinctiveness without relying on loud branding, instead favoring compositions that reveal themselves gradually. This philosophy reflects a broader shift in independent perfumery toward artist-led houses where the founder's personal taste shapes every release, rather than corporate creative committees.
