Heritage
A house, in its own words
The story of Reserve En Afrique 1934 begins not in a perfume school but in the personal history of its founder, Etienne, whose grandfather arrived in Senegal in 1934 from the Levant. That same year, a forest near the family home became a protected reserve, an event that would later inform the name and ethos of the house. Decades later, Etienne drew on this legacy to establish a fragrance brand that honors both his family's migration story and the land that became home. The 1934 reference in the brand name is a direct tribute to that pivotal year, a grounding point in time that connects three generations of the family to Senegal. Rather than reaching for European perfume traditions as a template, the house built its creative identity around the raw materials already abundant in West Africa. The decision to base operations in Dakar placed the brand close to the botanical sources it wished to showcase. The debut collection, Afrique Extraordinaire, arrived in 2024 and was presented at independent perfume retailers and events across Europe, signaling the house's ambition to introduce African perfumery to a global audience. Early releases like Afrique en Fleurs and Feu Sacré established a visual and olfactory language rooted in warm, resinous, and floral materials. By 2025, the brand had expanded its offerings to include Vanille Mafonja and Rouge Karkade, both of which appeared in the collections of specialist retailers like Bloom Perfumery London. The house has positioned itself as a storyteller as much as a perfume maker, using scent as a medium to reframe narratives around African craftsmanship and natural resources. Reserve En Afrique 1934 operates from a conviction that African raw materials have been underrepresented in fine fragrance for too long. The house seeks to elevate ingredients grown and harvested across the continent, giving perfumers access to botanicals that have rarely featured as protagonists in luxury perfumes. Rather than using African materials as exotic supporting notes, the brand treats them as the foundation of its compositions. This approach reflects a broader philosophical stance: that the perfume industry benefits from diversity of origin, and that scent narratives gain depth when they draw from varied landscapes and traditions. The brand also emphasizes accessibility within the niche fragrance space, working to create perfumes that communicate complexity without requiring prior knowledge of perfumery as a discipline. Each fragrance is designed to tell a story grounded in a specific place or ingredient, inviting wearers to connect scent with geography and culture. The house's language around its collections avoids vague superlatives, instead offering specific references to the botanical sources and the landscapes that inspired each release. This commitment to specificity extends to the brand's engagement with retailers, where staff are provided with detailed information about ingredient origins and olfactory intentions.
