Heritage
A house, in its own words
The story of Refan began in 1991 when a Bulgarian entrepreneur, driven by a personal love of beauty and fine aromas, opened a small perfume workshop in Sofia. Early on, the founder focused on mastering the basics of fragrance formulation, relying on local suppliers for raw materials and investing in modest laboratory equipment. By the late 1990s, Refan had expanded its catalogue beyond a handful of niche scents, introducing Rose Touch and Brown Leather, which quickly found a following among regional fragrance enthusiasts. In 2005 the company opened a second production line in Plovdiv, allowing it to increase batch sizes while preserving the hand‑crafted ethos that defined its early years. A strategic partnership with a Cyprus retailer in 2018 brought Refan’s scents to the island’s Nicosia Mall, marking the brand’s first foray outside Bulgaria. The Cyprus outlet operates as a showroom and a point of sale, showcasing the full range and offering customers a tactile experience of the bottles and ingredients. Throughout its three‑decade journey, Refan has remained a family‑run operation, with the founder’s children now overseeing marketing and product development. While the brand does not claim industry awards, it has earned consistent placement in regional fragrance fairs, where its collections are evaluated by independent perfumery panels. The company’s longevity reflects a steady commitment to quality, modest growth, and a focus on serving a niche of consumers who appreciate a straightforward, well‑executed scent without the flash of larger luxury houses. Refan’s creative outlook centers on clarity and authenticity. The brand believes that a fragrance should tell a simple story—whether that is the crispness of a Moroccan rose garden or the warm depth of brown leather. To achieve this, Refan adopts a pragmatic design process: perfumers (often external consultants) present initial accords, which are then subjected to a series of blind olfactory tests with a panel of scent professionals. The brand values transparency in ingredient sourcing, preferring natural extracts when feasible and clearly labeling synthetic components. Sustainability is approached through selective sourcing; for example, the rose absolute used in Rose Touch is obtained from Bulgarian farms that practice integrated pest management. Refan also emphasizes accessibility: pricing is set to allow a broader audience to experience a crafted perfume without the markup typical of high‑end houses. The company’s statements on its website stress a dedication to “turning an idea into aromatic reality,” a phrase that reflects its belief in disciplined experimentation over fleeting trends. This philosophy translates into a product line that avoids gimmicky packaging or fleeting fads, instead offering scents that aim to linger in memory through balanced composition.
