Heritage
A house, in its own words
Orla Kiely was born in Dublin on May 24, 1962, and developed an early interest in fashion and design. She pursued her education at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin before moving to London to further her career. Her early work focused on hat design, a craft she mastered before expanding into broader fashion territory. In 1995, she founded her own label in London, initially specializing in accessories featuring her distinctive graphic prints. The brand quickly gained recognition for its retro-influenced aesthetic, drawing heavily from mid-century modernism and 1960s and 1970s visual culture. Kiely's prints became her signature, appearing across handbags, clothing, and homeware. Her rise coincided with a broader revival of interest in vintage design during the early 2000s, positioning her as a leading voice in accessible luxury design. She received an OBE (Order of the British Empire) for her contributions to fashion, a recognition of both her commercial success and cultural impact. The fragrance line launched in 2010 represented a natural extension of her design universe, allowing customers to experience her aesthetic through an entirely different sensory medium. The partnership with KMI Brands facilitated the development and distribution of these fragrances, with IFF (International Flavors & Fragrances) providing fragrance creation expertise. Kiely's design philosophy centers on optimism, color, and timeless graphic patterns. She has consistently spoken about her love of mid-century design, citing the work of 1960s and 1970s designers as major influences on her aesthetic. Her prints are characterized by clean geometric shapes, bold colors, and a sense of playful repetition that transforms everyday objects into statement pieces. When approaching fragrance, this visual sensibility translated into an interest in creating scents that felt both familiar and distinctive. Her debut fragrance was described in industry coverage as embodying the spirit of her fashion collections, with fresh, approachable notes that reflected her design ethos. The collaboration with IFF brought technical expertise to translate these visual values into olfactory terms. Rather than pursuing avant-garde or challenging compositions, Kiely's fragrance work prioritizes wearability and joy, matching the inviting nature of her printed designs.
