Heritage
A house, in its own words
NORD was founded in 2023 by cousins Karel Baan and Arthur Karens, lifelong friends who grew up together in the Netherlands before eventually launching a fragrance brand together. The origin story reportedly traces back to an airport perfumery encounter, where the two founders, after passing through security, walked into a duty-free shop and began questioning the conventions of mainstream fragrance: the glass, the bulk, the spray atomizer, the lack of refill logic. That conversation, repeated in interviews by both founders, became the seed for NORD. The brand is based in Rotterdam, a city with a strong design community that has shaped its visual and product language. Coverage from independent beauty press in 2023 identified NORD founders Arthur Karens and Karel Baan as Dutch entrepreneurs entering the fragrance category with a solid balm format built around refillable cartridges. The brand gained early visibility through a crowdfunding campaign under the handle @nordcorp, with public video material documenting the launch of what was described as a pocket-sized, refillable fragrance. In its first year, NORD released three fragrances, Bonfire, Pepper Party, and Dancing Flowers, all expressed as solid balms rather than eaux de parfum. The choice to debut exclusively in balm form signaled from day one that the brand saw itself as a format-first house, not a typical spray-perfume label stretching into adjacent categories. As of available coverage, the founders remain closely involved in product development and brand direction, operating from the Netherlands with a young team. NORD's creative vision centers on the idea that fragrance should be portable, refillable, and integrated into daily movement, not reserved for a vanity. The founders have spoken about wanting to rethink how perfume is carried, dosed, and replenished, treating scent as a personal utility rather than a luxury object that lives behind glass. This carries through to the brand's stance on waste: refillable cartridges are positioned as a response to the throwaway culture of single-use fragrance packaging. The brand's approach to scent development favors compact compositions designed to perform at balm concentration, which tends to sit closer to the skin than alcohol-based sprays. Rather than chasing projection, NORD leans into intimate sillage, scents that read as personal rather than performative. The launch trio, Bonfire, Pepper Party, and Dancing Flowers, reflects this thinking: each is built around a single dominant mood or material reference, with a clarity of intent that suits a format meant for quick reapplications throughout the day. NORD also frames fragrance as a travel companion. The airport origin story is core to how the brand talks about itself: scent chosen for a destination, packed into a carry-on, refreshed mid-journey. This travel-forward framing shapes everything from the miniature case dimensions to how individual fragrances are named.
