Heritage
A house, in its own words
Maya Njie's olfactory practice is rooted in a cross-cultural upbringing that informs every aspect of her work. Born in Sweden to Gambian heritage, she grew up navigating multiple worlds, and these experiences became the foundation for her approach to fragrance. Photography initially played a central role in her creative expression, serving as a medium for documenting moments and places. She eventually began translating these captured memories into scent, a natural extension of her interest in sensory storytelling. In 2016, she officially founded Maya Njie Perfumes after developing fragrances initially for her own personal use. The brand emerged organically as interest from others grew, leading her to formalize her practice and make her creations available more widely. Operating from London, she built her studio practice around her unique perspective as a self-taught perfumer without formal industry training. Her journey from personal exploration to established brand reflects an authentic trajectory driven by creative curiosity rather than conventional industry pathways. The brand name itself represents her direct personal stake in the work, an approach that distinguishes her from houses with anonymized founding narratives. Over the years, she has expanded her output while maintaining the intimate, personal quality that characterized her earliest creations.
Njie views fragrance as a vehicle for preserving and reimagining personal history. Her creative process draws from memory, but she has noted that memory is not always essential to her work, sometimes engaging with fantasy or pure sensory exploration instead. This flexible approach allows her to move between the autobiographical and the imaginative, creating fragrances that resonate with personal history while remaining open to broader interpretation. She treats each fragrance as a form of souvenir, capturing moments and sensations that retain their emotional weight even as they transform through olfactory interpretation. Her philosophy emphasizes connection over categorization, resisting the industry's tendency to sort fragrances into neat categories. Rather than pursuing market positioning or following established trends, she develops scents that reflect her own perspective and allow wearers to project their own experiences onto them. The interplay between her Swedish and Gambian heritage infuses her work with contrasting influences, Nordic restraint alongside West African warmth, creating scents that operate across cultural boundaries. She maintains a studio practice in London where she works directly on formulations, keeping the creative process close to the final product. Her approach prioritizes authenticity and personal expression over commercial considerations, a stance that shapes both her creative decisions and her business model.
