Heritage
A house, in its own words
The Marley family's stewardship of Bob Marley's legacy spans more than four decades since his death in 1981. Through Tuff Gong International, the company Bob Marley founded, the family has managed his musical catalog, image rights, and brand extensions across merchandise, hospitality, and now fragrance. In 1981, a pivotal year following his passing, Nana Rita (Bob Marley's mother) reportedly purchased a property that was renamed Tuff Gong International Records. She transformed it into a hub for the family's ongoing cultural and business operations. Decades of careful brand management followed, with the family licensing Bob Marley's name and likeness across various product categories while maintaining the authenticity of his message. The decision to enter fragrance came as a natural evolution, allowing fans to experience his philosophy through a personal, intimate medium. In 2025, Marley Fragrances launched as the family's first foray into scent creation, developed in partnership with IMH Fragrance. The collaboration with Givaudan brought professional perfumery expertise to the project, while Michael Malul's fragrance house facilitated the creative process. This launch represents one of the most significant brand expansions since Bob Marley's death, translating his songs about love and unity into wearable expressions.
Marley Fragrance operates on the principle that scent can carry meaning beyond mere aesthetics. Each of the six fragrances embodies a core message from Bob Marley's body of work, transforming abstract concepts like love, unity, and peace into tangible sensory experiences. The brand positions fragrance as a daily companion for these values rather than a special-occasion luxury. Rather than creating a single signature scent, the collection offers multiple expressions, allowing wearers to select based on their mood or intention. The philosophy extends from Bob Marley's belief in accessible spirituality, rejecting exclusivity in favor of broad resonance. The partnership with Givaudan ensures technical quality while the Marley family's involvement maintains cultural authenticity. Every fragrance name directly references Marley's vocabulary: Simmer Down calls for patience, Soul Rebel honors resistance, Satisfy My Soul speaks to fulfillment. The collection rejects the notion that fragrance should be mysterious or unknowable, instead offering transparent, purposeful scents rooted in specific meanings.
