Heritage
A house, in its own words
Madewell's story in clothing began in 1937, when a New England family founded a workwear company under what would become the Madewell name. The original manufacturing operation produced durable garments for American workers, and the last of its factories closed in 1989, seventeen years before the brand was revived. In 2006, J. Crew Group acquired the Madewell name and relaunched it as a women's denim-focused label, separating the new retail concept from its industrial past while keeping the name as a nod to the original family business. Fragrance arrived decades after the relaunch. In 2019, Madewell released its first collection of perfumes, a coordinated set of five scents intended to capture distinct facets of the brand's visual and emotional vocabulary. Two years later, in 2021, the brand collaborated with Bon Parfumeur, a Parisian house known for numbered, single-note-forward formulations, to produce a joint fragrance. The collaboration positioned Madewell alongside an established European perfumery, signaling a more intentional approach to the category beyond its original debut release. Madewell's fragrance philosophy mirrors the simplicity of its clothing line: accessible American style translated into scent. The 2019 collection was built around evocative place-and-mood names rather than abstract fragrance terminology, inviting wearers to associate each bottle with a feeling, a color, or a landscape. Beau, Chambray, Indigo, and Sedona each anchor to a recognizable image, a working closet of fragrances rather than a library of perfumery. The 2021 partnership with Bon Parfumeur introduced a contrasting sensibility. Bon Parfumeur built its reputation on numbered compositions that isolate and celebrate individual notes, and the collaboration brought that transparent, ingredient-forward approach into Madewell's world. Together, the two projects suggest a brand interested in fragrance as personal accessory, something worn alongside a favorite pair of jeans rather than collected as fine art.
