A house, in its own words
Maar was established in 2021, though its story really begins before the brand had a name. Its founder was living abroad when an unexpected meeting with a French perfumer turned a passing fascination with scent into something more serious. The two began exchanging ideas about composition, raw materials, and the kind of fragrance they felt was missing from the market. When the founder returned to Lithuania, the collaboration continued across borders, with formulas drafted in one country and refined in another. The first three fragrances, Mina, Élise, and Nayla, were developed during this period and formally introduced in 2020. Cleo arrived the following year, rounding out an opening chapter that the house has treated as foundational rather than introductory. By 2025, Maar had re-emerged with SPRING OF YOUTH, a release that suggested the house was ready to move beyond its initial circle of compositions. Operating out of Lithuania, Maar occupies an unusual position in European perfumery: a Baltic house with French creative roots, working at the pace of a studio rather than a corporation. The name Maar comes from the Lithuanian verb meaning 'to be free,' and freedom, in this context, means creative autonomy. The house has stated that its fragrances are meant to be more than products, though it has been careful not to define them too rigidly. Rather than pursuing trends or seasonal cycles, Maar builds its catalog one composition at a time, allowing each scent to develop fully before the next is considered. This deliberate slowness is the brand's most consistent principle. The house's creative decisions are shaped by a personal relationship with its French perfumer collaborator, and that continuity gives the catalog a recognizable sensibility without imposing a uniform signature. Maar seems to view fragrance as a form of quiet communication rather than a luxury statement, and its philosophy reflects a wish to make niche perfumery feel approachable without diluting it.
