Heritage
A house, in its own words
The Lee Cooper story begins in 1908 when Morris Cooper, a Paris-born couturier (1889 to 1958), partnered with his friend Louis Maister to establish a footwear and workwear business in London's East End. The small operation, set up at a property on the Avenue Matignon, was originally a modest family enterprise. Under Morris Cooper's direction, the company gradually transformed from its workwear origins into a respected British fashion house. The brand gained recognition for its quality craftsmanship and distinctive East End character, qualities that would eventually define its global identity. By the mid-20th century, Lee Cooper had established itself as a cornerstone of British denim, becoming what multiple sources describe as one of Europe's oldest and most enduring denim brands. The company maintained its British heritage throughout decades of fashion evolution, weathering changing trends and economic shifts while keeping its East London roots intact. This century-long trajectory from workshop to worldwide recognition provided the foundation for the brand's eventual expansion beyond clothing into lifestyle products, including the fragrance collection that launched in 2010. Lee Cooper's approach to perfumery draws directly from the brand's musical and denim heritage. The fragrance lines for both men and women read like chapters in a music store, with guitar imagery woven throughout the creative narrative. This musical thread connects the fragrances to the brand's rebellious, creative identity that emerged from East London counterculture. The partnership with Jacques Bogart, a known player in the fragrance industry, shaped the initial creative direction when the first scents launched in early 2010. Richard Ibanez has served as both perfumer and creative director, bringing consistency to the fragrance vision across multiple releases. The brand positions its scents as extensions of personal style, much like a favourite pair of jeans become part of one's identity. Rather than chasing seasonal trends, the line maintains a stable collection of signatures that reflect enduring appeal. The London Spirit sub-line, introduced in 2014, suggests an ongoing commitment to capturing the spirit of the brand's British origins in olfactory form.
