A house, in its own words
The story of Kristiansand New York begins with two Norwegian women, Britt Hovde Ross and actress Elisabeth Steen, whose paths crossed in New York City. Their encounter reportedly sparked the idea for a fragrance that would honor their shared homeland while celebrating the city that brought them together. Kristiansand, the southernmost city in Norway, has long been associated with shipbuilding, maritime trade, and as a beloved summer retreat with its archipelago of islands and sandy beaches. The brand chose to translate this coastal identity into olfactory form, pairing it with New York's reputation as a global center for fashion and ambition. In 2010, the brand released its debut fragrance, Kristiansand, which remains its signature and primary offering. The perfume was developed in collaboration with Drom Fragrances, a German fragrance house with a significant presence in New York's creative community, where perfumer Pierre Constantin-Gueros maintained a studio in Tribeca. The brand's limited catalog suggests a deliberate choice to refine rather than expand, allowing a single fragrance to represent its complete vision. While the founders brought backgrounds in acting and business, respectively, their shared Norwegian identity became the emotional core of the brand's narrative. Kristiansand New York operates from a philosophy of geographical storytelling, treating place as the primary source of inspiration rather than abstract fragrance families or trend-driven compositions. The brand's creative direction centers on the tension between calm and intensity, coastal openness and metropolitan density. This duality manifests in the fragrance's architecture, which seeks to evoke both the serenity of Scandinavian landscapes and the assertiveness of New York style. The founders reportedly believed that scent could serve as a form of portable identity, allowing wearers to carry the essence of multiple places simultaneously. Rather than chasing seasonal collections or limited editions, the brand has maintained consistency in its single offering, suggesting a belief that longevity and reliability matter more than novelty. The philosophy extends to the brand's name itself, which refuses to choose between its two inspirations, instead holding both in equal regard. This balanced approach reflects a distinctly Nordic sensibility toward design: restraint, authenticity, and an emphasis on craft over spectacle.
